What is a snapshot?

A snapshot is a saved copy of a sandbox's state that you can restore or copy. Some providers save files only. Others save memory too, so running processes come back.

What a snapshot is for

You can return to a known state after a change goes wrong. You can also start many sandboxes from one prepared state, with the packages already installed.

Files only, or files and memory

A file system snapshot keeps the disk. A full snapshot keeps the disk and the memory, so programs continue where they were. Providers use different names for it, such as checkpoint, fork or branch.
